My Story: From Special Occasion Dress Designer to Certified Public Accountant

In high school I took a sewing class. My teacher, Ms. Guy, made me take out every seam in my dress at least a hundred times – for various reasons. She was a difficult teacher, but it is from difficult teachers that you learn the most! What I discovered: I was good at sewing and went on to complete an associate degree in fashion design.

After making a wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses for one of my best friends, I was approached by one of the guests at the wedding, who happened to be a wedding coordinator. She asked if I’d be interested in doing other weddings and get paid for it. “Of course!” was my answer and that is how my special occasion dress company was started.

So, you say, what does that have to do with accounting? Well, I kept my own books and really loved getting into the details. This may seem crazy to some because to most there is nothing fun about accounting!  But for me it was just as exciting as creating beautiful one-of-a-kind dresses that turns heads when you walk into a room.

I went back to school to learn how to keep better books and understand what story the numbers were telling me. Along the way, I found that accounting was more fun than designing dresses! The thought occurred to me: If you like accounting and business, then why not combine the two? I figured, if I was going to be an accountant, why not get the top certifications in the field, CPA? After rigorous studying and virtually no personal life and voila! Renee CPA was born.

My skills took me to public accounting firms, non-profit organizations and governmental agencies, first as an auditor then as Controllers – sometimes in a consulting capacity. Those position weren’t really where my heart lived, so I went back to my roots: business.
